CFVA’s Board of Directors reflect the varied member industries–including Film, Video and new media professionals.
I’m Patrick Hackett and I am proud to call myself a Colorado Filmmaker. With more than a decade in the trenches, I know all too well the difficulties involved in working in this industry between the coasts. As the Director at Skytheory, I use digital storytelling techniques to produce successful commercial projects and independent works. I have written and directed numerous films, with Slave to the Grind and Raising Republic garnering coveted festival acceptances. I am also a Production Manager; being entrusted with meager indie budgets to multi-million dollar budgets, most notably on such titles as Courting Condi, Seclusion, and An American Terror. In my free time, I’m either back at the movie theater gaining inspiration, or at a local music venue listening to live music. I also play the drums.
- D.K. Johnston is a full-time Director and Assistant Director for film & television production with over 12 years of experience. D.K. his start in the small indie film community of Anchorage, Alaska making low/no budget snow machine and snowboard videos before collaborating on his first feature film in 2005-2006. After gaining his BA in Journalism from the Univ. of Alaska Anchorage he pursued an MFA in Film Production in Los Angeles through the New York Film Academy. After graduating in 2009 he worked for various production and post-production houses before returning to Alaska during the development of the state’s film incentive in 2010. There he established company, Tri-Seven Pictures, and was a large advocate for production education and crew development throughout Alaska. In 2011 D.K. formed the non-profit group Alaska Filmmakers to highlight and educate current and up and coming storytellers. He worked as a full-time Assistant Director and Producer for multiple local, national and international commercials, feature projects and short films while also teaching Documentary Film Production at the Univ. of Alaska Anchorage. He was later recognized as one of Alaska’s Top 40 Under 40 by the Alaska Journal of Commerce in 2015. In 2015 D.K. and his wife Katie relocated to Denver to be closer to family and join a larger production market. Today D.K. has added Producing to his resume with his company’s first feature film “Army & Coop” shot in Boulder and Louisville, Colorado. He has also been added to the DGA Qualified list for Third Area Assistant Directors.
Johnny Johnson, also known as “JJ,” was born in northern California and grew up mostly in Colorado. Working at the world-renowned Red Rocks Park & Amphitheatre for more than fifteen years, he switched gears and joined the film & television world with his spare
time during the off-seasons.
Attending FULL SAIL UNIVERSITY, JJ received several awards and was the first student to successfully broadcast native stereoscopic 3D during a live Hi-Def production. Actively taking part in several productions, both on and off campus, he worked up to being Director of a 16mm film and later was Director of Photography for a 35mm film when another opportunity for native 3D stereography arose within the University.
Always pushing the limits, stereography became his new playground. Using two SONY EX3 cameras, JJ headed the team that produced the first “gradfest” for FULL SAIL UNIVERSITY to be presented in 3D. Upon graduating with honors, he met with SONY representatives and became a prototype camera operator on the NEX-FS100 and HXR-NX3D1U.
Interested in helping create a strong, professional film community in Denver, CO, JJ returned to creating commercials for DAVE & BUSTERS, FILM ON THE ROCKS, and more, he pushed WhoKnowZ into making the production company motto; business comes first so pleasure can last.
Maintaining his stance for, “hiding in the shadows,” JJ continually makes great effort to produce quality projects while allowing for client recognition. Always pushing technology to the next levels, he strives for aiming beyond resolution to what’s next.
Sheri Kaz has been working in the Colorado Film and Video industry since graduating from the University of Denver. She has worked as a writer/producer for an ad agency, directed commercials and specials at 9News, Gannett Productions and has owned her own production company, Kaz Creative, since 1996.
Sheri is proud to be the first woman Director in Colorado to direct an award-winning, internationally distributed feature film, released in 1999.
Always happy to be a part of the team, she has worked in production on several other indie features and broadcast productions, including The Amazing Race, Food Network Challenge, Blue Collar Comedy, Rides Again, The Winter X-games, Entertainment Tonight, Good Morning America and most recently, The Joey Canyon Show.
Ms. Kaz has been active in the community as an Adjunct Professor at the Colorado Film School and served as a board member on the CFVA over a decade ago.
Sheri loves getting her hands dirty, and helped start a community garden in her neighborhood and can’t wait for spring!
Tammy Brislin is the Co-founder of the Women+Film Festival| VOICES (VOICES) which is produced annually with the Denver Film Society. Previously, Tammy worked for the networks Starz Entertainment and HDNet as an On-Air Producer in the Promotions Department. During her tenure as a Producer, she promoted a diverse range of topics such as film, news, sports, music and reality shows. She interviewed 100’s of filmmakers and celebrities, went behind the scene on movie sets and music videos. She traveled nationally and internationally to Red Carpet events, Press Junkets and Film Festivals. Thru all this her passion for film festivals was born.
Katherine Roberts is an Emmy-nominated born storyteller. From 9-5, she works as the Director of Video Production at Carbon8 in Denver, CO.
Of all her tasks, Katherine loves writing scripts the most, and also really enjoys producing on shoot days. Working with a team and seeing a nugget of an idea come to life on screen is a treat as well as a job. And don’t tell her clients, but she thinks storyboards are a giant pain.
Prior to joining Carbon8, Katherine worked for FOX Broadcasting Company in Los Angeles, and was an instrumental part of the marketing team, launching shows like “New Girl”, Gordon Ramsay’s “MasterChef”, and what would become a worldwide phenomenon, “Glee”.
She started her career living all over the country producing in television news. She’s moved from Pittsburgh to Boston to San Francisco and several cities in between.
Originally from St. Louis, Katherine graduated with a bachelor’s degree from the world-renowned School of Journalism at the University of Missouri-Columbia. She is an avid consumer of film and television and can’t watch enough of everything from classic Hollywood films to “The Real Housewives”… but she probably shouldn’t admit that.
Most importantly, she has two loves: cooking and raising a tiny dog with a big personality.
I started as a Production Assistant on a BMW commercial fifteen years
ago, and have traveled the globe working on hundreds of commercials,
documentaries, television shows, feature films, and corporate videos ever
since. I have been a part of many great crews for clients such as Jeep,
Dodge, Mitsubishi, Chrysler, New Balance, Jockey, Burger King, Dunkin’
Donuts, Starbucks, and Quizno’s, just to name a few. I strongly believe in
the power of our world-class crews, world-class talent, and of course, the
unrivaled beauty of our world-class locations. I’ve witnessed firsthand what
this community can do when it’s at its best – and it’s incredible! I would be
honored to serve on the board of the CFVA to help our community grow
The Telluride Horror Show, one of the world’s premier horror and genre film festivals. During his two-year tenure, the festival has more than doubled its attendance annually. Prior to the Telluride Horror Show, Volz served three years as the PR & marketing director for the Mile High Horror Film Festival. As a publicist, he has represented other film and entertainment entities, including the Denver Film Festival, actor Bill Pullman, Visionbox Studio, Telluride Blues & Blues Festival and Film on the Rocks, where he continues to serve as a VIP guest relations manager. He has secured media coverage (pitching and facilitating through story development and release) with numerous outlets including TIME, Entertainment Weekly, MTV, Indiewire, The Hollywood Reporter, Birth. Movies. Death., The Huffington Post, 5280 Magazine, The Denver Post, Colorado Public Radio and all major television network affiliates.
As art director at Denver-based Rocket House Pictures, Volz has helped produce a number of music videos, commercials and short films. He is currently writing narrative for a State of Colorado documentary regarding the State Capitol Senate and House Chambers restoration.
A Native Coloradan, Jared Petsche has worked in the film/media industry, state government and with the surrounding Denver communities’ many non-profits. From PA work on films, commercials and music videos to producing and directing live television, Jared has run the creative gamut in production. He has a passion for anything creative and loves to share it with the world.
I was previously a CFVA Board member from 2007 – 2011. At that time, I had just accepted my current position as Director of Membership and Volunteers for the Denver Film Society. Prior to working for festival organizations, all my previous professional experience was in television and film production. I was a production freelancer for most of my 20 year career.
A mass communications graduate from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. I began my career as a production assistant at Barlow Productions in St. Louis working on numerous projects with Anheuser Busch, Energizer and several informative videos for local companies while I was finishing up my senior year. After graduation I moved to Chicago to be closer to my family. In Chicago I became a part of the talk show world starting off as a production assistant at The Jerry Springer Show and quickly worked my way up to coordinating producer handling a majority of the themed event shows as well as shows taped specifically for sweeps. I was with the show for a little over 6 years and even moved to Connecticut when the show was transferred there. I moved to Colorado in spring 2013 and worked several freelance jobs for “The X-Factor” and MTV’s “MADE” where I assisted in everything from casting to taping auditions. Since October 2014 I have been working as the director of the on-camera roster at Wilhelmina Models, the division better known as W-Talent. In my current position I manage all of our on-camera talent, assist in them developing their skills and book them for numerous projects in Colorado. I also spend time taping our local talent for pilots and film projects all of the country.
Steve Replin’s education includes a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting; a Masters Degree in Business Administration (MBA) from NYU with distinction; a Juris Doctor(JD) degree from the University of Denver College of Law; and an LL.M (master of laws) from the NYU School of Law, in Taxation. Additionally, he holds a Certified Public Accountants certificate (CPA) issued in the State of Colorado.
