This past October CFVA board member D.K. Johnston was invited to attend the 6th annual Southern Colorado Film Festival located in the San Luis Valley in the town of Alamosa, Colorado. Since its creation the festival has played host to a variety of short and feature length films from all around the world. The three-day long festival (Oct. 12-14) is coordinated by several members of the Adams State University faculty and staff, and screenings were held at the Society Hall in center of downtown Alamosa. Upon arrival you are greeted by the very friendly festival staff and community volunteers, who go out of their way to ensure you have a great experience when visiting the festival.
The theme for the 2017 festival was Convergence, intending to inspire a diverse conversation about cinematic expression. In additional to projects from around the United States this year’s festival included films from the United Kingdom, Iran, Poland, Taiwan, Sweden, France and Czech Republic. Providing great insights into the different styles of filmmaking for the festival’s attendees. Along with Q&A sessions with attending filmmakers several workshops and panels were also held during the festival. Many highlighting the importance of community filmmaking, and resource available to up and coming filmmakers all over Colorado.
At the conclusion of the festival filmmakers were invited to attend an award ceremony and after party hosted by the sponsors and volunteers. Multiple jury awards were distributed in addition to audience choice awards for each block of screenings. The festival is sponsored the Office of Colorado Film as well as a number of San Luis Valley community members, businesses and Adams University community organizations. Those who attended the festival were also supplied with discounted coupons from the local coffee and breweries in the area. If you are looking into the 20+ film festivals held in Colorado every year we encourage you not to overlook the Southern Colorado Film Festival.
